My Role

ART / CULTURE

Project Overview

AI can mimic the image, remix the archive, and manufacture the look of rebellion. But can it make a scene? We follow artists and image-makers working inside the machine—and against its appetite for everything they create.

“Machines can make images. Only culture can tell us what they mean.”

ELASTE Editorial

A fashion editorial pairing photographed bodies with AI-generated doubles—each frame asks where the styling ends and the simulation begins.

DRESSED FOR THE UNREAL

FROM THE ARCHIVE / INTO THE FUTURE

Four proposed encounters between original ELASTE material and new work. The archive is the source; each reinterpretation is a response, not a replacement.

1983

THE FIRST CUT

Original ELASTE print material establishes a restless visual language. Contemporary reinterpretation: newly commissioned artists recut its layouts with AI, exposing what the machine smooths away.

1987

STYLE AS STATIC

Archival fashion imagery treats the body as a site of invention. Contemporary reinterpretation: a new photo essay tests that freedom against today’s algorithmic beauty standards.

1994

THE UNDERGROUND SPEAKS

Original music and subculture pages record voices outside the mainstream. Contemporary reinterpretation: a new sound-and-image piece asks whether platforms amplify those voices or flatten them.

2026

AN UNFINISHED ARCHIVE

ELASTE returns to its print experiments without pretending they predicted AI. New work puts archival scans beside human-made and machine-assisted responses—and leaves the disagreement visible.

BOWIE. HONG KONG. NO FIXED FORM.

David Bowie and Hong Kong belong to ELASTE’s story, but the original account has not been supplied. Rather than invent its words, this space holds its place. ELASTE’s independent spirit lives in a refusal to treat art, fashion, music, or photography as separate territories. Today that curiosity extends to artificial intelligence: a tool to experiment with, a system to question, and never a substitute for a point of view. The original Bowie and Hong Kong text should appear here unchanged when available.

WEAR THE IMAGE. KEEP THE QUESTION.
